Preventing and Reducing Juvenile Delinquency : A Comprehensive Framework
Published in Hardcover by Sage Publications (March, 2003)
Author: James C. Howell
Average review score:

Most comprehensive coverage of juvenile justice available
Dr. James Howell's book is the most comprehensive and up-to-date source currently available on the American juvenile justice system. Chapters cover the causes and correlates of delinquency, various parts of the juvenile justice system, what works and what doesn't to prevent and reduce delinquency, and presents compelling arguments about why a separate juvenile justice system (distinct from the adult justice system) should be retained. A must-read/must-have one-stop source.

The Princess and the Pekinese
Published in Hardcover by Howell Canyon Pr (June, 2003)
Author: Trisha Adelena Howell
Average review score:

Enjoyable reading and a good lesson for children
Beautifully illustrated by Paul Lopez "The Princess and the Pekinese" is a delightful children's story. It is the story of a little girl who was the only focus of her parents' affection until a small Pekinese dog joined the family. As a result she becomes jealous and from there her adventure really begins. After a rough time on the streets she comes to realize and appreciate her blessings. This is a great children's story that has a positive message. As I read through it I quickly realized how positive this would be for children who suddenly have an additional brother or sister, grandparent, or pet come into their home and are feeling that they are not getting the attention they are used to receiving. It is a highly recommended children's book.

Regulating Labor
Published in Hardcover by Princeton Univ Pr (17 August, 1992)
Author: Chris Howell
Average review score:

Clear, concise prose that explains the state of labor today
An unflinching look at how the labor movement, such as it is, came to be how it is today. Howell takes an x-ray to the historical, economic and political influences that have shaped our world and controls the people who built it.

One of Howell's greatest strengths is focusing on the specific without ignoring the greater context. Reading this book will give you a strong foundation on the state of labor today and a perspective of the world it exists in. It also happens to be lucidly written and a compelling read.

Scottish Magic
Published in Mass Market Paperback by Kensington Pub Corp (Mass Market) (April, 1998)
Authors: Hannah Howell, Manadalyn Kaye, Elizabeth Ann Michaels, Stobie Piel, and Mandalyn Kaye
Average review score:

A great collection of Fairy Tales and love.
This colection of Fairy tales and magic is great for any reader. I love anything with Scottish heros. The way Lily fights all that she knows for the man she loves. The story of a girl that sees her love in dreams before she sees him in real life. The disbelief of a man turning into belief. The strength of Stuart MacLachlan's love, that he will wait 100s of years and fail time and agian and keep trying to win her. These are true stories of hardships and the loves that keep going.

Servants, Misfits and Martyrs: Saints and Their Stories
Published in Paperback by Upper Room (December, 1999)
Author: James C. Howell
Average review score:

Exceptional Moral Examples
Having grown up in the Orthodox Church, I have had a somewhat limited understanding of saints, which has been changed by my contact with American Protestants. This book offers a very contemporary understanding of saints, giving the stories of many people we ignore in the Orthodox world, but people who offer tremendous examples of God's power and love. Because I did not know anything about them, the saints I enjoyed reading about were Clarence Jordan, Martin Niemoller, and Karl Barth. I am surprised by these because they are not the norm. Author Howell uses a definition that seems to be consonant with Christian teaching, though I doubt that many of the people featured in this book will have feast days on the calendar.

The Sexual Life of Savages and Other Stories
Published in Hardcover by St. Martin's Press (June, 1996)
Author: Stokes Howell
Average review score:

Entertaining, experimental, erotic, funny, good.
The stories in this collection are a mix -- rural America, hip New York city. Some are better than others, but all have a...attitude and style that is great. Well worth buying

Siege: Crisis Leadership & the Survival of U.S. Embassy Kuwait
Published in Paperback by Howell Pr (15 February, 2001)
Authors: Roberta Culbertson and W. Nathaniel Howell
Average review score:

Inside "Kamp Kuwait"
"Siege" is the story, as told by the American ambassador to Kuwait, of the four-month ordeal that he and his colleagues faced in staying at their posts despite Saddam Hussein's order that they leave. They were effectively isolated from the rest of the world save for the tenuous radio link they maintained with Washington, and the sporadic visits of unofficial emissaries (e.g. Jesse Jackson, as seen on the cover) and Iraqi officials. Also housed on this compound was a hastily-collected group of American and other western civilians, who were NOT free to leave--for which reason the Embassy refused to close: these civilians had been gathered in as opportunity allowed, to save their being used as human shields in Iraq's defense of the occupation of Kuwait.

"Siege" is also an anthropological analysis of the interactions within this de facto community, an examination of how people come together and cooperate in the face of external threat. The physical discomforts they endured were manifold: heat, insects, montonous diet, finite supplies. But the worst danger was the psychological toll that their uncertain situation COULD have exacted, had the Embassy staff's leadership faltered.

The Ambassador is modest in his self-appraisal & generous in that of his fellows (both Embassy staff and civilian); he certainly did not ask to be besieged, but when the situation was thrust upon him he accepted on-site responsibility for all. The story, as he recounts it, makes me hope that were I ever to find myself in similar straits, that my companions and my leadership would be cut from the same cloth. Besides learning what actually happened in the Embassy compound during Desert Shield (the media afforded only short glimpses & that story was soon eclipsed by Desert Storm), I was left with a new appreciation of human versatility & spirit.

My only complaint about the book is the small number of pictures; then again, they were under SIEGE, for crying out loud!
